WA Athletic Scrapbooks,
Main Entry: Athletic Director
The first Athletic Director for Woodward Academy was Ira Sanderson.
At that time, the Athletic Director was also head of the Physical
Education Department. When Sanderson became Director of Admissions
in 1973, Petty Ezell, a biology teacher and football, basketball,
and baseball coach, was appointed AD. Ezell retired from the school
in 2000 and was replaced by Dave Chandler, who had been a coach
and principal of the Middle School.
Scope and Content:
Arranged in chronological order, this collection consists of 21
scrapbooks chronicling the activities of Woodward athletic teams
and individuals. The scrapbooks cover school years 1973-1991 and
1994-1997. The books are standard scrapbooks, spiral-bound, composed
almost exclusively of newspaper clippings from local newspapers
and the Atlanta papers. Most are 13”x15”, although
the last three are a larger 12”x16” format.
The composition of the scrapbooks reflects the importance of athletics
to the school, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. Most of the
clippings concern football teams coached by Graham Hixon and Johnny
Stallings and truly display the significance of the football program
to the students and as a source of advertisement for the school.
Over time, the growing diversity of the student body and the proliferation
of new athletic programs and girls sports began to detract from
the impact of football as a focal point for student activity.
Also, as the southside community continued to change demographically,
Woodward enjoyed less coverage in the newspapers.
