GMA and WA Football Programs,
1945, 1977-1997

Main Entry: Athletic Director
60 Football Programs

Biographical/Historical Note:
The first Athletic Director for Woodward Academy was Ira Sanderson. At that time, the Athletic Director was also head of the Physical Education Department. When Sanderson became Director of Admissions in 1973, Petty Ezell, a biology teacher and football, basketball, and baseball coach, was appointed AD. Ezell retired from the school in 2000 and was replaced by Dave Chandler, who had been a coach and principal of the Middle School.
Graham Hixon became the head football coach in 1963. After many successful years, including two state championships in 1970 and 1980, Hixon retired in 1987. Johnny Stallings, who came to GMA in 1966, became head football coach in 1988 and retired after the 1997 season. He was followed as head coach by Dale Wiggins who came to WA in the early 1980s.

Scope and Content:
Arranged in chronological order, this collection consists of 59 football programs, 8.5”x11”, dating from 1945 and 1977-1997, excluding 1993. The vast majority of the programs were printed at the beginning of the football season and covered the entire year. The earliest programs from 1945, 1977, and 1978 were much shorter and were printed for each individual game. The programs in the 1980s and 1990s became longer and increasingly included more information about all the sports teams. This tended to reflect the more diverse nature of the school over time and the proliferation of sports teams.
