GMA Uniform Artifacts,
1930s-1967

Main Entry: Development Office
Volume:
60 Items

Biographical/Historical Note:
The Office of Development and Alumni was created in 1961 by Capt. William R. Brewster. M.C. Paget was the first director (1961-1968) and Bob Ballentine was the first Public Relations Director in the 1960s. The Office has been responsible for Alumni affairs, publications, annual giving, and other organized fundraising efforts, such as Capital Campaigns. Over decades the office underwent a number of reorganizations with numerous directors, systems, and programs. Beginning in the mid-1960s, with the increased public relations activities of the Development Office and the Alumni Association, the Development Office became the repository for many items of historical significance, including scrapbooks chronicling the widely published activities of the school, especially in the local newspapers, and GMA uniforms and artifacts of uniforms donated by alumni over many years.

Scope and Content:
This artificial collection consists of 60 eclectic pieces of GMA cadet uniforms donated to the Development Office over decades. Since no records of these donations were made, these items cannot generally be associated with any individual cadet and ,therefore, are catalogued as Department Records Transfer rather than Manuscripts of an individual. These items are not associated with any distinct time period and might have been used over many decades, although the bulk were probably used from the 1930s through the 1960s. Of special interest is a GMA blazer which was introduced as a transition to the WA uniform. Some items were new, including three pairs of white cotton gloves and nine black belts with brass buckles (still in original packages). Also included are 16 felt patches with crest and mascot, two feather cap plumes, and a white fleece swim warm-up suit (two pants) used in the 1960s. For more information on GMA uniforms and uniform artifacts, see Manuscripts Finding Aids.
