Biographical/Historical Note:
The office of the Upper School Principal/Associate Headmaster was created in the late 1970s. Bob Ballentine, who came to GMA in 1959 and held a number of teaching and administrative positions, served as principal from 1976 until his retirement in 1984. Ron McCollum served as principal from 1984 until 1999 when he became Headmaster. This office became responsible for planning and implementing graduation procedures and exercises during this period. Roger Sloan, who came to Woodward in 1971, was the Academic Dean during this period and assisted with academic requirements and graduation- related events.

Scope and Content:
Arranged in chronological order, the collection consists of handwritten, typed, and photocopied pages , computer printouts, student newspapers, and printed invitations, admission tickets, and programs relating to graduation exercises and events, 1991-1999. These papers were collected originally in nine jumbled legal-sized file folders, one for each year.

These materials consist of graduation invitations, lists of graduates, and processional orders for all years. Included also are college enrollment statistics, baccalaureate, senior banquet, and graduation notes and schedules. All years contain lists of award winners, administrative forms and correspondence concerning graduation procedures and Honor Roll, as well as copies of the student newspaper, The Blade (1991-1999). Of special interest are notes, contracts, and e-mail correspondence concerning rental of the Convention Center in College Park since the school outgrew the on-campus facilities for the Senior banquet. Also included is information about the senior National Merit Scholars and National Achievement Scholars Program for black students. Also included are notes sent by Ron McCollum to Ben Johnson, Chairman of the Board, with statistics about each graduating class. Also for the first time there was a competition for delivering the Senior oration.
