The office of
the Upper School Principal/Associate Headmaster was created in the late
1970s. Bob Ballentine, who came to GMA in 1959 and held a number
of teaching and administrative positions, served as principal from 1976
until his retirement in 1984. This office became responsible for
planning and implementing graduation procedures and exercises during this
period. Roger Sloan, who came to Woodward in 1971, was the Academic
Dean during this period and assisted with academic requirements and graduation-

chronological order, the collection consists of handwritten, typed, and
photocopied pages and notecards, computer printouts, carboned expense receipts,
student newspapers, one photograph, and printed invitations, admission
tickets, and programs relating to graduation exercises and events, 1978-1982.
These papers were collected originally in five jumbled legal-sized file
folders, one for each year.
consist of graduation invitations, lists of graduates, and processional
orders for all years. Included also are college enrollment statistics,
baccalaureate, senior banquet, and graduation notes and schedules.
All years contain lists of award winners, administrative forms and correspondence
concerning graduation procedures and Honor Roll, as well as copies of the
student newspapers, The Vorpal Blade (1978) and The Blade (1979-1982).
Of special interest
are handwritten pages inserted by Roger Sloan, Academic Dean, sketching
seating arrangements, critiquing the events, and suggesting alternatives
for the next year, including the first graduation held in front of Richardson
Hall in 1979.
