GMA Scrapbook of John B. Klein, Jr.,

Main Entry: Development Office
1 Photograph, 1 Scrapbook

Biographical/Historical Note:
John B. Klein, Jr. was born in 1910 and attended high school in Oklahoma City before entering Georgia Military Academy as a Junior in September, 1928.  During his two years at GMA, “Jaby,” as he was nicknamed, became very involved in student journalism acting as the Features Editor for the Gamilicad, under faculty advisor L.L. Deck.  Klein graduated in May, 1930, after completing the Engineering Course.  He later moved west and resided in Denver, Colorado.

Scope and Content:
The collection consists of one 5”x7” photograph and one scrapbook, 16.5”x12.25”, 1928-1930.  The studio photograph, in the original folded cover, is a portrait of Klein in GMA uniform, and is marked, “John B. Klein, Jr., Oklahoma, City.”  The 58-page scrapbook is a novelty-type, mass- produced, hard-cover book with screw bindings.  With the GMA emblem embossed on the cover, it includes five pre-printed pages for autographs, addresses, and remarks of friends, and pages for recounting athletic events and year-by-year remembrances, such as, “Pleasure Jaunts,” “Social Gatherings,” “Classroom Boneheads,” and “Theatres, Lectures, and Entertainments.”  Klein’s personal, handwritten recollections fill these pages.  Also included are graduation invitations from 1928-1930, GMA decals and pennant stickers, and travel stickers from Colorado.  There are 23 pages of newspaper clippings from the Gamilicad and local papers concerning GMA sports teams (football, basketball, swimming, boxing), as well as military parades and inspections.  Of special interest are clippings of  the night football game between GMA and a Cuban team played at Georgia Tech.  Klein’s interest in journalism is reflected in  excerpts of his Gamilicad articles and in a photo-clipping and ticket from a May 9, 1930, convention at the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism.  The scrapbook includes 5 pages of photographs of friends and Company “B”  and the Junior Class, 1928-1929.

Because of its fragile state, use of the scrapbook is restricted.
