A native of Dalton, Georgia, Alfred Wortley Jones was born in
1910 and died in 1990. He attended Dalton High School from 1922
until 1926 when he came to Georgia Military Academy. Jones graduated
in 1927, magna cum laude with an engineering diploma. While at
GMA was an accomplished member of the rifle team and the track
team. he attended Georgia Tech and returned to Dalton to marry
the former Frances Napier (whose father was Attorney General of
Georgia and a friend of Col. Woodward) in 1940. During World War
II, Alfred Jones served as personnel manager for the American
Thread Co., which manufactured cord for parachutes. He sold automobiles
for a while after the war, and in 1955 formed a successful real
estate company in Dalton.
Scope and Content:
The collection consists principally of printed material, two photographs,
one school newspaper, one 1927 graduation invitation, and artifacts
from the 1926-1927 school year. Two photocopied newspaper clippings
from Dalton papers concerning Alfred Jones are from 1988 and 1990.
Also included are six important artifacts from the late 1920s-
a dress uniform jacket, two dress caps, a GMA rifle team medal,
etc., housed in the artifact area. Two black-and-white photographs
display Jones wearing the uniform jacket and dress cap included
in the collection.
