Biographical/Historical Note:
Born in 1932, Stewart Candler Bird entered GMA in 1945 and graduated in 1950.  While at GMA, he became an accomplished swimmer and an enthusiastic member of the very successful swimming team under nationally recognized coach Les Fouts.  Bird also participated in international competitions in 1949 and 1950.  After graduating GMA he served in the Navy until about 1955. He later graduated from the University of Georgia and began an advertising and public relations career in Atlanta.

By 1965, Bird became instrumental in raising money for a new swimming pool, the Cecil Kennedy Natatorium, completed in 1966.  Bird served as President of the Alumni Association, 1965-1966.

Scope and Content:
Arranged in chronological order, the collection includes three scrapbooks containing group and individual photo prints, newspaper clippings, manuscript notes, ribbons, telegrams, printed certificates, letters, and postcards, concerning the GMA Swimming Teams, 1946-1950.  These scrapbooks include extensive newspaper clippings, team records and photos, and written notes recording individual and team performances.  The 1946-1947 scrapbook also includes a thirty-three page section of newspaper clippings covering the “1947 Emory Swimming Teams.”  The scrapbook “GMA Swimming Team, 1948” is unbound, in fragile and remnant form.  The largest scrapbook ( bound, 12”x14”) concerns the 1949 and 1950 GMA Swimming teams , although some pages have captions with missing pictures.  Of particular interest are clippings and printed programs concerning international competitions with Cuba, known as the Havalanta Games, in 1949 and 1950.
